As a movement comprised of people who are all engaged in their own grassroots efforts to stop mountaintop removal mining and build a new future for Appalachia, Mountain Justice always has a need for people willing to work on internal Mountain Justice organizing. Signing on to one of our many working groups; helping maintain the website and other online resources; planning camps, actions, and other events; and contributing to list-serve discussions are all crucial aspects of MJ organizing. Best of all, this be done from wherever you call home!
Grassroots groups and campaigns are often in need of volunteers for work and action organizing. Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia have tons of volunteer opportunities for people from all walks of life who are interested, able, and committed.  We recognize that many people want to help but cannot manage to make it to the regions
where grassroots groups and campaigns are happening. Mountain Justice is committed to
providing information and resources for organizing from your hometown -
we cannot overemphasize the importance of raising awareness, fundraising,
plugging into national campaigns, and generally engaging your campus and/or
community in the fight to end mountaintop removal.
There is a lot of important work being done outside of the coal fields to elevate
the issue of Mountaintop Removal and Appalachian environmental justice into
a national issue.
Volunteer with open eyes. Mountain Justice is modeled (loosely) on Mississippi and Redwood summers. In both campaigns the realities of the settings were made explicitly clear to participants. Measure your commitment and understand why you are volunteering - ask questions, research and do some soul searching. We are committed to being transparent to everyone about the conditions and risk we face struggling for the survival of our mountains. While coal company tactics have traditionally consisted of threats, intimidation, and occasional aggression, Mountain Justice is committed to ensuring your safety and preparation - trainings are offered throughout the summer in safety, security culture, first aid, and field survival skills. Organizers work hard to provide training and communicate openly about on-the-ground conditions.
