“ Voices for Appalachia”
Written and Narrated by Hundreds
An Appalachia Portrait-Story Project
“The portrait-story project contributes to the self-empowerment
of people organized to struggle for, retain or increase their self-determination,
autonomy, liberty, culture and prosperity through the generation of
intellectual
material for grassroots organizations to reproduce and market as a
fundraiser for causes within their communities. Those whom the Portrait-Story
Project
serves are responsible for publishing and marketing the portraits and
thus receive all proceeds from any sales.”
Post-Katrina
Portrait-Story Project artist Francesco di Santis joined us
at our 2008 Mountain Justice training camp in Kentucky to continue work on
his latest project “Voices for Appalachia”. Francesco is working
with other regional organizations throughout Appalachia and the project has
traveled to Mountain Justice Spring Break, the mountains of eastern Tennnessee,
the Appalachian Studies Association conference and the Heartwood Forest Council.
The project consists of charcoal drawings that the participant (or a family
member who is able) writes their personal narrative on the portrait in their
own handwriting.
